May 22, 2008 TYP Teleconference: Maximizing Protective Factors for American Indian Youth Through the Implementation of Cultural Based Mentoring Programs
According to recent statistics; 45% of American Indian children and youth have only one parent in the home or have at least one parent in a federal or state correctional facility. Data indicates that mentoring programs can help young people by reducing their first time drug or alcohol use, improve relationships and academic performance and in reducing the likelihood that they will initiate violence. This teleconference will provide OJJDP TYP grantees with resources, guidance and best practices in developing a mentoring program in their community.
